Tougher measures to control encroachment

Two state agencies have come together to tighten measures to prevent forest encroachment after finding that more than 6,000 Rai of mangrove forests have been destroyed during the last decade.

Under the joint Department of Special Investigation and the Department of Coastal Resources and Marine, thousands of officers and devices such investigation closedcircuit TVs, satellite imagery and unmanned aerial vehicles are being used to identify and arrest those responsible for spreading.

Thailand's mangrove forests along the coastal area of ​​3,100 km and over the past 10 years, approximately 6,635 Rai of forests have been destroyed. So far 990 cases of mangrove encroachment in court, said the Natural Resources and Environment Minister Vichet Kasemthongsri.
